Hey Allen, you'll get your package in a bit ... it came back to me ... evidently after 9/11 packages over 13 oz. have to be checked in w/ the usps during normal business hours. Just letting you know, to be looking for it next week some time.
Hi Allen. I just got a note back from Tim ... He's on Kayakmind and lives in Iburg. I dont' really know where it is, but he said he and some of his friends run Balcony Falls when the water is up. Anyways, I had contacted him and various other people on this site who might shuttle in that area, and I wanted to let you know. I would send you his web page, but I dont' know how to navigate this site so well, yet. I think he's in Southeast Paddler group, or MD., Va., WV. paddler group or something - I think you and he are in one of the same paddling groups or something. Can't quite remember. Anyways. just keeping you in the know.
Dropped you package in the mail yesterday. If you've never looked at a CKS or NRS catalogue before ... can be kind of overwhelming for looking for wet/dry gear. Basically, you just need a layer of wet gear, and for really cold water, a dry top over that ... possibly some dry pants. Not necessarily an entire drysuit, unless you know you'll be doing really cold weather paddling regularly (dry suits are pretty pricey if you don't ear them all the time).
OK, that' it for me. I'll be paddling in Richmond here in the next week or so; when the wind dies down, and the water isn't hideously low.
Really, don't know you, but wish you and yours a lovely Christmas and New Year. (and I hope Santa brings you all kinds of cold gear ... so I can grab a shuttle some time this winter for Balcony Falls). Happy Holidays.
Hey Allen, I really feel your pain as far as finding people to shuttle with out here. No one around these parts even really knows the concept of ww kayaking. So I'm just learning on my own. But really obsessed w/ it and strong willed about tapping into my potential on the water. It frusterates me to no end that I can't find others to tag along with jsut for shuttling. so really, do keep me in mind for the spring time. Even early spring, I've got some hydroskin pants you can borrow, and dry bottoms and and extra splash top, (these are all men's, so they would fit you ok) so if the water is still really cold... or if you know oif any other interested parties for shuttling that run out at Balcony falls, pass my information along to them, please. Just letting you know ... I'm game to go whenever. Thanks for keeping me in mind for shuttling. I'll drop the stuff in the mail tomorrow.
Evidently I traded back some used stuff to CKS for newer gear, and well, it cost as much to send the stuff back to CKS, as I got back in store credit from them. too bad I hadn't just hung onto the stuff, becasue I would have just given it to you. Sounds crazy, but I live out in the middle or nowhere, and really I hate to see good equipment unused ... would rather give it to someone to use it ... which is essentially what happened when I traded at CKS.
But I do still have the gloves ... perfectly usable ... just kind of worn and old and a bit out dated by today's standards of paddling gear. But warm. And also one skull cap.
Just send me an address for me to send them to .. you can write me at qsphilbrick@yahoo.com if you don't want anything posted as a free-for-all to see on this site. I'll send you the latest CKS and NRS catalogues.
OK, well hope to hear back from you, even if you change your mind on ever shuttling together. Get back with me for a place to send this stuff.
Glad you can use the gloves and cap(s) ... I probably have some other stuff lying around that I don't use; if I can find them, I'll send them to you .... just give me an address to forward them to.
I remember there's a full-body wet suit from CKS on a discontinuation sale .... normally $109.00; now 59.00 I think. I don't know if they'd have it in your size, but worth looking into. Might be kind of tough to get on .... no zzipper, sor the neck is ultra stretchy for you to pull it on. It's only .5 mm neoprene, as opposed to the typical 1.5-2mm neoprene thickness. But because it's full body, it definitely helps for warmth under a dry top.

Being a student, you may not have much extra spending money for kayaking gear, but some of the aformentioned may help!
Glad to know that Balcony Falls is a favorite of yours ... so if you do get geared up enough to run in the cold, you might contact me for a shuttle? Either that, or send my info. onto any one else interested in that run, so I can shuttle with them.
Hi Allen, thanks for getting back with me so promptly. I have a lot of cold water gear, although i'm sure none of it would fit you ... but most of my gear I have either purchased from NRS (Northwest River Supply) catalogue, CKS (Colorado Kayak Supply Co.) catalogue, or my local outfitter, Apppomattox River co., who thankfully has a shop in the town nearby.
I have a splash top and dry pants and neoprene pants you could fit into, also have a skull cap you can have ... I never use it, and have a couple of extras... to wear under your helmet. I also have some really heavy, kinda outdated, neoprene gloves you can have. But for advisement on keeping warm, any catalogue will probably be able to advise you better than me on how to stay warm in cold water paddling.
Even if we never meet to run a river, if you want the cap and gloves, write me back. I'll get them to you some way.
And especially if ever interested in running Balcony Falls (below maury/James merge), let me know so I can grab a shuttle.
You're probably not into the winter time scheme of things as far as paddling is concerned. I generally run alone, and I'm not the greatest paddler of all time, but if you would like to meet to shuttle together up where the Maury meets the James any time, I'm game. Any time. I't kind f dangerous for me to go completely alone in the winter, so even if we didn't run together on the river, that would be fine wiht me ... I just might watch to see some of the lines you might pick if you were around ... but really, I would just be interested in using you as a shuttle, as well so you cold notify the coroner if in fact, something di happen to me ... (kidding).
Hello Allen,
I live in the Clifton Forge area and I am also looking for others to paddle with..I know its short notice, but we are going to run the spillway at Gathright Dam this weekend.your more than welcome to join in.
I am in Virginia for a couple more weeks (through about July 25th). I haven't been able to do much paddling since I have been here, but I would love to get on the water while I am still around. I heard the James and Maury are pretty good around where you are. Holler at me if you are headed out for a run.
