I really grew up boating at a great summer camp called Keewaydin of Vermont. I started form canoeing when I was ten. At thirteen, I began taking plastic Old Town's on extended camping trips; often down the whitewater of New England and Quebec. About the same time, I learned to whitewater kayak (up to class IV) and a little C-1 experience in/around New York.
For the last 12 years I went to college and then lived in norther Wisconsin. While there, I paddled on cold seasonal rivers.
I have taught kayaking professionally and amongst friends.
Last September, I relocated to South Carolina to take a Recreation position with the Sumter National Forest. My primary responsibilities keep me in the woods, but I do get to work on the Tyger, Enoree and Broad rivers, which run through the district in upstate SC.
I am interested in meeting folks to paddle (III-IV) kayak, (II-III) open Canoe, or paddle/portage trips. I have been too safety conscious at work for the last 8 years to want to paddle alone.
Paddling:
River Running, Creeking, Slalom, Freestyle
Favorite Rivers:
Many rivers of the far NorthEastern US, including the Androscogen, Rapid River, Hudson, Otter Creek, Hartford Rivers, St. Louis (MN), and Montreal (MI)
Boats:
Perception Pirouette, Wave Sport EZ, Wanona "Fishermen" (15' canoe)
Other Activities:
Training for upcoming triathlon. I love to get outside...hiking, mountain biking, road biking, running the dogs. Mostly things I can do on short notice and often alone. That said, I love company, but the town I am living in is all about big trucks and 22" wheels.
I like culture too. Just checked out the Columbia Museum of Art (free on Saturdays) and enjoyed some great Indian Food
Music:
Across the board...Most recent acquisitions include the newest Drive By Truckers, Cat Empire, WIlco, Feist, Jack Johnson, Aimee Mann, Alison Krauss/Robert Plant duo, Radio Head (Thom Yorke), Government Mule, Tool (old habits die hard). These days I will check out most anything I can stream from a variety of public radio stations.
Movies:
Netflix just keeps bringing them to my door and I can't resist.
I love the classics (especially the old black and whites) and the newest "Who-done-It", action films, serious films about the plight of the world and individuals who struggle on (helps put things in perspective), oh yeah... I really like comedies with dry humor too.
Anything with Denzel Washington, Jet Li, Cate Blanchet, to name a few
Books:
presently reading The Open Road: The Global Journey of the 14th Dalai Lama. I try to keep up with Paddler magazine.
Good Things:
Paddling a canoe across a glassy lake, mist rising, and no one has to say a word.
Enjoying the northern lights at 2 am and 15 degrees F.
Sitting with my dogs, enjoying most any scene in the woods, on the water, in the back yard.
Hateful Things:
When you drive out of range of a radio station when they are playing your favorite song. Hate is a slippery slope, try to avoid getting too serious about that stuff.
