About Me:
I've been paddling for about 15 years. Started on the Potomac in an old Dancer under the stern tutelage of Eric "Ordeal-boy" Brooks. Spent my formative years in a boat on the Potomac, and mountains of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Western Maryland. Taught Jimmy Blakeney how to roll, and was so disgusted when he completely surpassed me and went pro that I fled to Japan.

Spent nearly 5 years there with my lovely wife Monica paddling the chossy but gorgeous rivers of Nippon and snowboarding in the mountains of Nagano. (Minnasan, genki neh! Watashi no nihongo mo bochi bochi ni narimashita. Da kedo, gambarimasu...)

My wife Monica and I are now back in the Washington D.C. area. I started KayakMind about five years ago, but had to take a break during grad school and my first year and a half as a reporter for The Baltimore Sun.

Things have quieted down and KayakMind retooled and ready to go full tilt. Jimi B's on board and we are stoked.

Why getting the crap kicked out of you is funny

I usually have one of two reactions when I'm stuck in a big hole: panic or laughter. Either I fear for life and limb or I find the situation thoroughly amusing. The panic part makes sense. But laughter? Why laugh when you're completely out of control? Turns out it's just a bi… Continue

Sounds good. I'll send you a message if I'm ever out that way again. I actually used to live in Prince William County awhile back, my sister used to work for Nat Geo there in D.C., and I actually used to live about an hour or so from Silver Spring MD; uesd to live in St. Mary's County right by the PAX River Navy Air Station.

I just recently started paddling back in May, took a class at the Airforce Academy Outdoor Rec program. Only done stretches of the Arkansas river for now, have done the Pueblo Dam to the Nature Center twice, once close to 2000 cfs, and then 4200. Also did the Milk Run to Ruby campground down in Buena Vista at 1650 cfs...at that flow it created some nice class III's, and a handful of holes. I want to get out on the river as much as possible before classes start back up for me. Are you in Colorado also? If you plan on doing some beginner to intermediate runs anytime soon, and don't mind having a beginner with you, please invite me. I'd like to get more experience on the river and learn as much as I can from more experienced paddlers. I have all my own gear too.

FYI

Link to the 51st Hudson River White Water Derby in upstate New York this weekend (North Creek, NY).

http://whitewaterderby.com

Two-day event for canoes/kayaks with Novice/Giant Slalom races on Saturday and the main White Water Derby Race on Sunday. Race has been known to attract 15,000 spectators along the banks of the Hudson from North Creek to Raparius. The Schenectady Chapter of the ADK's White Water Club attends every year getting on the river prior to the race and setting up at "key" locations to watch the "carnage" and offer assistance to participants. A fun event.
